This procedure is often done alongside a hemorrhoidectomy. It\u2019s especially helpful for patients who suffer from high resting sphincter pressures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sphincter is the group of muscles at the end of the rectum and surrounding the anus. This muscle group controls a person\u2019s ability to move their bowels. Those who have high resting sphincter pressure are often constipated, which could result in anal fissures (breaks or skin tears).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lateral internal sphincterotomy is the last resort for those with high resting sphincter pressures, especially if following a high-fiber diet or taking stool softeners do not work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is sphincterotomy performed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lateral internal sphincterotomy is an outpatient procedure that takes approximately 30 minutes to do. You\u2019ll either be put to sleep via general anesthesia or receive local anesthesia. If it\u2019s the latter, you\u2019ll be awake during the procedure but you\u2019ll be given medicine to relax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actual procedure starts with inserting an anoscope (a lighted tube) inside the anus for the surgeon to see inside. This tube will guide the surgical tools inside the anus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the tube, the surgeon will then make a small cut in the internal anal sphincter. This will help reduce the pressure on the muscle and allow any anal tears or breaks to heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although you can leave on the same day of the surgery, it\u2019s not advisable that you drive on your own, especially if you will be under strong pain medications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lateral Internal Sphincterotomy&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients who underwent this procedure reported that pain from their anal tears went away after a few days. However, full healing will take about 6 weeks. You\u2019ll also be required to take 1 to 2 weeks of rest before you go back to your normal activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also a few postoperative pointers to keep in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Expect to feel some pain during the first few bowel movements (this pain will be considerably less than before surgery)<\/li><li>Expect to see light bleeding after bowel movements for a few weeks<\/li><li>Rest a lot and take short walks that you can tolerate<\/li><li>Ask someone else to drive you around while you are still on pain medications<\/li><li>Drink lots of water and add more fiber to your diet<\/li><li>Follow your doctor\u2019s advice on medications, especially with pain killers and stool softeners<\/li><li>You can shower or bathe, but make it a point to dry your anal area<\/li><li>Take a sitz bath (sit in warm water 10 cm high) to lessen the pain; you can do this three times a day and after your bowel movements<\/li><li>Use baby wipes as these are softer and will not irritate your anus, as opposed to tissue paper that can have a coarse surface<\/li><li>Do not use fragranced soaps to avoid possible chemical irritation&nbsp;<\/li><li>When moving bowels, place a small step under your feet to flex your hips and help your pelvis go into a squatting position; this will aid your muscles in passing stool easier<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lateral internal sphincterotomy involves opening the inner anal sphincter muscle.
